EIN for Mercury

EIN for Mercury — prepared the way Mercury wants to see it

Mercury — a U.S. fintech whose bank accounts are provided through partner banks — is a popular choice for non-U.S. founders. The application asks for your EIN and matches it against your formation documents. Even tiny mismatches mean a rejection — usually with no explanation.

Why this is hard alone

Getting an EIN as a non-U.S. founder is full of small traps

The IRS process wasn't designed with international applicants in mind. Most rejections and multi-month delays come from a handful of avoidable mistakes.

Common pitfalls

What usually goes wrong when filing alone

  • "Trade name" differs from legal name on Articles, then differs again on the EIN letter.
  • EIN letter received but in a degraded scan format that Mercury's verification can't parse.
  • Business activity description on SS-4 doesn't match what you tell Mercury.
  • Mercury sends a verification email asking a question — and you don't know how to respond correctly.

Our approach

How we prevent each of those problems

  • Every name (passport, Articles, SS-4, Mercury form) matches before submission.
  • EIN letter delivered as a clean PDF, suitable for Mercury upload.
  • Business description coordinated between SS-4 and your Mercury application.
  • Mercury verification questions? Forward them to us — we'll draft your response.
Our approach

What we actually do for you

  1. Name & document alignment

We verify that your passport details, Articles of Organization, and intended Mercury application all use the same names — caught before submission.

  2. EIN filing with Mercury in mind

Your SS-4 business activity description is coordinated with what Mercury expects to see, reducing verification friction.

  3. Verification support

If Mercury asks a verification question, we help draft your response. The "Banking Readiness" package includes this.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions from non-U.S. applicants

If your question isn't here, contact us — we'll answer honestly, even if the answer is 'this isn't a fit for our service.'

Does Mercury actually accept non-U.S. residents?

Yes. Mercury (a fintech, with accounts held at partner banks) is one of the few U.S. business-account providers that opens accounts for LLCs owned by non-U.S. residents, subject to its own eligibility checks. You'll need an EIN, formation documents, ID, and a clear answer to a few KYC questions.

How long after I get my EIN can I apply to Mercury?

Immediately. As soon as you have the EIN confirmation letter, you can complete the Mercury application. Many of our clients open their account within a week of receiving the EIN.

Will Mercury accept the EIN confirmation right from the IRS?

Yes — the IRS-issued EIN confirmation letter (CP 575) is the gold standard. If you've lost yours, you can request a 147C letter from the IRS, which Mercury also accepts. We can help with either.

Why do Mercury accounts get rejected after the EIN is issued?

Most rejections come down to: (1) name mismatch between formation docs and EIN, (2) industry restrictions on Mercury's side, (3) sanctioned-country residence, or (4) unclear business activity. We help prevent issue #1 and #4. The other two we'll flag during onboarding.

Can I open a Mercury account before forming my LLC?

No — Mercury requires a U.S.-formed entity (LLC or C-Corp). The order is: form the LLC → get the EIN → apply to Mercury.

The IRS determines its own processing times, which may vary depending on application volume. Faxed applications requiring a response by mail can take 1–3 months to process. We simplify the process by following up with the IRS on your behalf and keeping you informed of your application status. Once your EIN is assigned, we notify you promptly. While processing times cannot be guaranteed, we strive to make the experience as smooth and straightforward as possible. All prices are listed in USD with no hidden fees, and payments can be made securely through PayPal using supported international payment methods.
